2006 Olympic Torch, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

The 2006 Olympic Torch is making progress after unexpected weather delays. After worrying about having a snowless winter Olympics the weather has finally cooperated and dumped mountains of snow on northern Italy.

Last week heavy snow and bitter cold weather made running the torch impossible. Many roads were made inaccessible which also made driving the torch difficult. Organizers were forced to let carriers of the torch run shorter legs than had been planned.

The 2006 Olympic Torch finally emerged from the heavy snow and made its way into Milan for an evening of fashion shows and music. The torch spent the evening in the Piazza of the sandcastle like Duomo.

Hopefully the torch was able to enjoy the views from the top of the Dumo which are spectacular. Visitors to the Duomo can take stairways up to the roof and walk around or just sit and enjoy looking at the architecture.

The 2006 Olympic Torch also ventured into its fifth foreign country when it crossed the border for a quick visit to Switzerland. While in Switzerland the Torch ambled along the shores of the beautiful Lake Lugano. The Torch has also visited Vatican City, San Marino, Slovenia and Austria.

In Asti the 2006 Olympic Torch was met by spectators wearing the medieval costumes of the Palio of Asti the oldest horse race in Italy. Children representing Unicef were in the crowd. From Asti the 2006 Olympic flame visited Imperia an important producer of the black “taggiasca” olives. The Torch then visited San Remo a resort on the Italian Riviera famous for its casino and Festival of Italian songs.

At the end of January the Torch reached the Piemonte for its first visit to the home region of the 2006 Torino Olympic Games. Though the 2006 Olympic Torch will continue to venture into other regions of Italy and even into France it is closing in on its final leg to be run on February 10 in Torino.
