Silvio Berlusconi Back in Power in Italy

The return of Berlusconi to power in Italy with the help of a controversial ally, the Northern League, has led some to ask “Should Italy be broken up into two countries?”

The discussion centers around the prosperous north subsidizing the poorer southern regions.

Now, Veronica Lario, Berlusconi’s wife has made a statement on breaking Italy in two. In an interview with La Stampa, she said: “Italy has never been well-suited to being a single country, and has never matured enough to become one. There is no longer any value in a unified Italy."

Her voice is added to that of Umberto Bossi, the leader of the Northern League. He has threatened to “take up arms” against the “corrupt” politicians in Rome who take the wealth from the north to the less developed regions in the south.

Like most countries, Italy is a conglomeration of vastly different cultures. Unlike most countries Italy changes governments with astonishing frequency. Is this just the government du jour talking or will this go away with the next government that is surely to come sooner rather than later?
