Torino 2006 Paralympics
The Paralympics truly live up to the Torino 2006 Olympic slogan "Passion Lives Here". Watching the Paralympics, a showcase for athletes with disabilities, is an inspiration for everyone.
The Paralympics are getting ready to celebrate their opening ceremony in Torino, Italy on Friday, March 10. The flame for the Paralympics has arrived in Torino, Italy and is now traveling through the city. The flame will enter the stadium at the opening ceremonies.
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960 with the first winter Games held in Sweden in 1976. Since 2001, the Paralympics have been staged to coincide with the Olympic Games.
More than 650 disabled athletes representing 40 countries will participate in the 9th Winter Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy.
In conjunction with the Games a Paralympic Hall of Fame has been established. Three individuals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at this year's ceremony. The individuals elected to the hall will be selected based on their athletic performance, history of sportsmanship and participation in community service.
The Paralympic village was inaugurated at Sestriere, Italy. The inauguration was attended by Olympic officials, politicians and Paralympic athletes. Two Paralympic villages in Torino, Italy have already opened and are now home to 300 people including athletes, coaches and staff. The village at Sestriere, Italy can host 1,000 people.
The opening ceremonies for the Torino 2006 Paralympics are Friday, March 10 and the closing ceremonies are Sunday, March 19.
