Books Set In Italy

I will be traveling to Italy this fall.  I always like to read books set in the country I am visiting.  Can anyone suggest good light reading (preferably novels) set in Italy that I can read while I am on vacation?

I like to do the same thing!  One of my favorites is the Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant.  It takes place in Florence.

Re: Books Set In Italy

I always enjoy Donna Leon's mysteries set in Venice.  Commissario Guido Brunetti is an officer in the Venetian police force.  Leon paints a vivid picture of Venice and what I suspect the Venetians think of their city and what they think of tourists in their city.  The mysteries are never straight forward and always have a few good twists and turns.

Leon really knows how to tell a great story.

Re: Books Set In Italy

A book we suggest every traveler reads before coming to Italy is The Italians, by Luigi Barzini. It was written in the 50's, in English by this Italian Senator, and explains why Italians are the way they are! Quite an amazing feat, and after living here for 27 years, we can see how valid it still is, even if Italian life has changed somewhat.
Another great book to read about Venice is City of Falling Angels, by John Berendt which tells the story behind the reconstruction of La Fenice Opera House.
Enjoy!

Hello Clara,
I know a beautiful book of Amelia De Rosa, ‘Italia Italia!’, that it follows the most important stages in the history of Italy. It is not a list of dates, but a story that ranges from history, geographical discoveries, inventions, literary and artistic masterpieces, made of costume and fashion.

Re: Books Set In Italy

Donna Leon has a new book coming out soon.  I love her books.  I always wonder if she is as popular in Italy as she is in the US.  Donna Leon's new book is called About Face and is due out on April 8.  Of course that will be in hardback which makes it expensive.  Her books are great to take with you when you travel.  About Face takes on the environment which is a topic Leon has tackled before in at least one book that I remember.  Italy, as beautiful as it is, has a number of environmental challenges starting with mounds of garbage in Naples.

Re: Books Set In Italy

This is probably a typical book, but I really enjoyed 'Under the Tuscan Sun' by Frances Mayes. It's a light, optimistic book that has also been turned into a movie (which I found pretty bad). I also like 'An Italian Education' by Tim Parks. He's an American writing about the general Italian life he observes and experiences while living there with his family.

Re: Books Set In Italy

Italy's love affair with the Fed Cup continued on Sunday as the reigning champions booked a place in the final against either Russia or the United States after a 5-0 whitewash against the Czech Republic.

Italy began the day with a 2-0 lead from Saturday's singles and needed only the first rubber of the day to book a fourth final in the last five years.

Top seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta scored the decisive point with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 win over Petra Kvitova.

And yet it was not all plain sailing for the world No.15, playing against 20-year-old Kvitova because Lucie Safarova had been ditched following her horror showing in Saturday's 6-0 6-2 thrashing by Francesca Schiavone.

Just as she had done in her 6-4 7-5 victory against Lucie Hradecka the day before, Pennetta found herself 4-1 down following the early exchanges.

But she showed the same fight and spirit that twice saw her come back from such deficits against Hradecka to claim the first set on a tie-break before running away with the second as her world No.60 opponent wilted.

"It's incredible to be in the final again, once more we've done something great," said Pennetta.

"Would I prefer the USA or Russia in the final? It makes no difference, although the USA wouldn't be bad so we could have a few days holiday over there."

Italy beat the States in the 2009 final on home soil in Reggio Calabria, meaning that their next meeting will be in America.

Having won this event in 2006 and last year, while losing the final in 2007, Italy are fast becoming a specialised Fed Cup unit.

"The girls have written yet another page in the history of Italian tennis," gushed team captain Corrado Barazzutti.
