Re: Live in Italy for 1 Year

I would spend a year hiking and biking the trails on the Ligurian Coast - especially around Cinque Terre.  I am assuming I would not have to work!

Re: Live in Italy for 1 Year

I would live in Nervi outside of Genova.  Nervi is beautiful.  There is a promenade along the sea with wonderful restaurants.  I would be able to go into Genova if I needed a day in the city (10 minutes by train) or down to Cinque Terre (30 minutes by train) if I wanted a day of hiking.

It would have to be an island - maybe Capri.

Re: Live in Italy for 1 Year

There are some many beautiful cities in Italy to stay in. It really depends on the personality of the person.
If I loved to stay by the sea/water I would go for Genova or Ancona, and if I have extra money to spend  I would live in Venice.

If you are like me, and like to wake up on the view of snowing mountains then the choice is wide from Cortina to Bolzano to Santo Stefano.

Now, let's talk about money. It would be quite expensive to rent a flat in the big cities, and it would be much cheaper to get one away from them. So, if I wanted to stay near to Venice I would live in San Fior or Conegliano, which are 30-minutes-by-train away. Small towns are also likely to be less trafficked, and less expensive (other than rent) than big cities. Looks like I'm the economist here smile

Re: Live in Italy for 1 Year

I think Venice was wonderful, but it's too much a tourist town for my tastes. Great for a trip, but I think staying there, even if money wasn't an object, would be a bit much. Especially during the middle of Summer when the air becomes more...fragrant due to the canals.

Of the (admittedly limited) places I've visited, I think I would live in Frascati. It's close to Rome, so I could easily indulge my love of urban life, but it's less expensive and more laid back. It may not have the mystique of Venice or the majesty of Rome, but it has a quiet charm while not being so far away as to be isolated.

Hello Grazie,
If I could go to Italy for a year I go to Rome because besides being the state capital, it is full of museum, palaces, and many ancient ruins of the old Roman civilization.

Man, I would live in Taormina.  There is not a more beautiful place in the world.

I agree with Taormina - you have beaches, Mt. Etna and incredible food.

Re: Live in Italy for 1 Year

I haven't been to southern Italy yet.  So, my answer is limited to what I've seen in northern Italy.  I think its a tie between Nervi for the beauty, convenience and distance to Cinque Terre and Florence just because I adored the city!

I would also have to say Florence! Though maybe I would think about going somewhere smaller and quieter, like the Piedmont area. I've visited a bunch of towns there and I found them so quaint and tranquil.

I can't believe no one has said Rome!  There is so much history there.  Plus with the airport and train station you can get to anywhere in Italy easily.  The restaurants are the best in the world.  I would definitely live in Rome.
