Who doesn't know Salvatore Ferragamo? We didn't buy a pair of expensive designer shoes instead, we checked out his shops and likewise, the headquarters in Florence.

There was a shoe museum and of course, we checked it out as well. It's true that you have to call for an appointment. So if you want to include the Shoe Museum in your itinerary, you have to call them and book in advance.

Ferragamo is known for his comfortable and elegant shoes. You don't see them much in the US anymore, but they are great shoes. Known as the shoemaker to the stars, Ferragamo made shoes for many Hollywood movie stars of the 1930'3 and 40's. Born in Naples as one of 14 children in 1898 to a poor family, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 16. When he returned to Florence in 1927 he opened his workshop in the Palazzo Spini Feroni, which today serves as the company's headquarters. Shoe enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the Shoe Museum (call 39-055-336-0456) open by appointment or for temporary exhibitions, which includes styles worn by Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe.
