The most celebrated part of the church of San Lorenzo is the Cappella Medicea (Medici Chapels), the Medici family mausoleum. The Cappella dei Principi (Chapel of the Princes), where the grand dukes are buried, was begun in 1604 and took 300 years to complete. It is built of marble and precise stones painstaking laid by Italian craftsmen. A narrow hallway leads to Michelangelo’s Sagrestia Nuova built to house the Medici tombs. Michelangelo’s use of white marble and dark grey stone creates a solemn atmosphere. Michelangelo produced some of his best and most well known works for the tombs including the tomb of Giuliano, youngest son of Lorenzo de’Medici with its reclining statues of Night and Day. On the opposite side is the tomb of Lorenzo’s grandson, Lorenzo Duke or Urbino with the figures of Dawn and Dusk symbolizing the passage of time.
