This is an unmistakable landmark of central Florence.  The beautiful interior of the Duomo is not to be missed.  The architecture and engineering of Brunelleschi’s dome is impressive, especially considering it was constructed in the 15th century.  I highly recommend climbing the cupola during your visit, although the line can be long during peak seasons.  It gives you an appreciation of the dome’s construction and a nice view of Florence.  The Campanile (bell tower) can also be climbed.  Be sure to check out the bronze art on the doors of the Baptistery next to the Duomo.

Florence’s unmistakable green and white Duomo with its rust colored dome dominates the historic center of the city. The building of Florence’s cathedral began in the 1290’s. It took over 100 years to build the church. The goal of the Florentines was to build a church that was larger and more magnificent than all other churches. The Basilica is the worlds fourth largest church, after Rome’s St. Peter’s, London’s St. Paul’s and the Duomo in Milan. The famous dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The building of the dome was a major engineering challenge given its huge size. The challenge was to build the dome without having it collapse under its own weight. The building of the dome took 16 years and was finally completed in 1436. Admission to the cathedral is free, but a fee is charged for admission to the Campanile, Baptistery and Cupola. For a close up view of the dome you can walk up 463 steps to the viewing platform. Next to the Duomo is the Baptistery, the oldest building in the city dating from the 11th century. The most famous feature of the Baptistery is its bronze doors particularly those designed by Ghiberti. The doors you see today are copies with the originals housed in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.
