The Galleria dell Accademia is a great museum, 24 rooms in all. Make sure that you get the guide. There are a lot on sale and it'll be handy as you explore the museum.

The tour was like a lesson in art history. I was overwhelmed with the beauty of art work dating back 14th to 18th century.

Ths is one of the highlights of our Florence trip. I would come back definitely and do the tour all over again.

The only reason most people visit the Galleria Dell’Accademia is to see Michelangelo’s celebrated statue of David. The statue stands an impressive 13.5 feet (4.1m) high. Finished in 1504 when Michelangelo was only 29 years old, the statue was carved from a single block of marble. The statue originally stood in the Piazza della Signoria, where a replica now stands. The Galleria, also Florence’s Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1563. It was the first school in Europe devoted to teaching drawing, painting and sculpture. The Galleria Dell’ Accademia houses other noteworthy statues by Michelangelo including his Quatro Prigioni which were originally intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II. The Accadamia also contains works of art by Pacino di Buonaguida, Gaddi and others as well as a collection of musical instruments. It is possible to reserve tickets in advance.
