| In the mid-16th century the Pitti Palace (Palazzo Pitti) was the main residence of the Medici family. Later it was home to the Lorraines and eventually became the royal palace of the Savoy dynasty (1865-1871) when Florence was the country’s capital. The palace was begun in 1457 by Luca Pitti a banker and rival of the Medici. The original design was by Brunelleschi, the designer of the Dumo’s dome. The building of the palace bankrupted Pitti and construction was stopped in 1465. The palace was purchased by the Medici in 1549. Today the palace houses numerous museums, including the Palatine Gallery, Modern Art Gallery, Silver Museum, State Apartments and Costume Gallery. The Palatine Gallery and State Apartments are a combined entrance fee. |
