| This is Florence’s most famous square and is full of cafés, restaurants, gelateria’s and street performers. The square is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and its famous tower. The Palazzo Vecchio has served as the administrative offices for the city of Florence for hundreds of years and still functions as city hall. The square is home to several statues and is where Michelangelo’s original David stood. The statue you see there today is a copy. Look for the plaque marking the spot where the fanatical priest, Savonarola was burned in 1498. Inside the Palazzo Vecchio are frescoes of the Medici family and other works of art. The bell in the campanile used to be rung to summon citizens to the square for public meetings and notices. Visitors can sign up for the Percorsi Segreti a guided tour that gives access to areas that are normally off limits. Near the Palazzo Vecchio is the Loggia dei Lanzi with some of Florence’s finest sculptures including the “Rape of the Sabine Women” by Giovanni Bologna. |
