Michelangelo's marble sculpture of David is located in Piazza Vecchio. It was presented to the Florentine public in 1504. According to history, the statue was supposed to placed inside the cathedral but was instead erected in the Piazza.

After Michelangelo's David, he was called by the Pope to paint the Sistine Chapel. Michelangleo's work is scattered around Florence and Italy as well. 

It was a beautiful piece of work. We were definitely awestruck.

In Florence you have one of the most important Michelangelo's works. In my opinion The Mosses is the best but, David is interesting, too. The original is in Galleria dell'Accademia but there is a Replica in Piazza della Signoria. If you are not an expert on art and you just want to know a little bit about the statue. It is a good option, too.
