Our hotel is near the Ponte Vecchio so we didn't miss this landmark for the world! The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval bridge over the Arno River. There were shops built around it e.g. souvenir shops, restaurants and more.

It is one of Europe's oldest arch bridges. Tourists flock to this area for photos. It's a great location, needless to say.

The Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) crosses the Arno at its narrowest point. This 14th century bridge, located in the heart of the city is one of Florence’s most famous landmarks. Today the bridge is lined on both sides with high priced gold and silver shops. Until the late-1500’s the bridge was lined with butcher shops, fishmongers and leather-workers. Grand Duke Ferdinando could not tolerate the stench as he crossed the bridge on his daily trip to the Palazzo Piti so he kicked them out and replaced them with jewelers and goldsmiths. The Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in the city not destroyed during the German bombing raids in 1944. The bridge withstood the disastrous flood of 1966 when a freak cyclone swept across the region. Water smashed through many of the shops and carried away a fortune in gold which has never been found. The bridge is particularly photogenic at sunset.
