Ristorante Alfredo Sull Arno - Restaurant - Florence, Italy
9 months ago

This restaurant featuring typical Tuscan dishes sits on the southside of the Arno and has a beautiful view of the Ponte Vecchio.  In the summer they open their terrace allowing diners to sit outside and look out over the river and bridge while they eat.  the menu includes seafood, steaks, veal and pasta.  Ask for a table with a view.  The food and service are excellent.

Relais Uffizi - Hotels & Hostels - Florence, Italy
12 months ago
I stayed in the Relais Uffizi with two friends.  We had a great suite - there was a bedroom, sitting room and loft.  It was perfect for three people.  The bathroom was large enough that three women could keep all their "necessities" there and not feel too crowded.  I can't say enough good things about the Relais Uffizi hotel.  The staff was very friendly and gave us a number of good restaurant suggestions.  Breakfast was very nice though oddly the coffee was not as good as I have had some places I have stayed.  This is not a problem as there are so many pplaces you can get good coffee.  The sitting room for the hotel looks out on the Piazza Signoria so you can stand at the window and watch all the hustle and bustle.  Our little suite was in the newer wing so it was more modern than some of the rooms in the hotel which are very quaint and romantic.  The location is great right behind the Uffizi.  My only caution is that if you have an excessive amount of luggage you may have to take several trips to get everything to your room.  When you come in to the hotel you have to either take an elevator (small by American standards) or walk up stairs to get to the reception desk.  I highly recommend the Relais Uffizi.

Splendide Grand Hotel Bellagio - Hotels & Hostels - Bellagio, Italy
12 months ago
I have stayed at the Splendide Grand Hotel in Bellagio twice with very different experiences.  The first time I stayed there I had a beautiful room in the older part of the hotel.  The room was decorated in beautiful old antiques.  The view of the lake was spectacular.  The bathroom was very large.  The beds were so-so, but overall the room was beautiful.  The second time we stayed at the hotel we stayed in the newer wing and I felt like I was in a convent.  The beds were newer and better but other than that the room was sterile and had no view of the lake.  Both times I stayed there the staff was friendly and helpful and the rooms were very clean.  The breakfast was more than adequate.  You can't beat the location. The Hotel is right on the lake in the middle of town.  You can see the hotel as you approach the town on the ferry.  If you stay here I would be sure to ask for a view of the lake.

Lido Caparena Hotel Taormina - Hotels & Hostels - Taormina, Italy
1 year ago

The first thing you need to know about the Hotel Caparena is that it is located on the beach and not in the center of the town. The second thing you need to know is that a train runs about 40 yards in front of the hotel and you will hear the train day and night if you leave your windows open. Having said that the beach is beautiful and closing your windows keeps out the noise of the train.

The Hotel Caparena is located about a 15 minute car ride from the center of town. The hotel runs a shuttle that will drop you off and pick you up but you need to call the reception desk well in advance to let them know you will be taking the shuttle. The shuttle holds about 6 people so if the hotel is crowded you may have trouble getting a spot. The staff at the reception desk will call you a taxi which costs about 12€ each way. You can easily catch a taxi back to the hotel from the center of town.

The train station for Taormina is located quite a distance from the center of town.  The hotel was actually closer to the train station than a hotel in town would be. The taxi to the hotel cost 16€.

If you want a view of the sea you need to ask for it or you could end up with a view of the road.

The hotel was very clean and our room was large with a nice sized bathroom.  The lobby was bright and sunny, but the staff was mixed - several people were surly while others were friendly.  Most spoke English well.

The restaurant at the hotel is excellent and they have serve wonderful local wine.  I would give the restaurant 5 stars, but the hotel only 3 stars.

Hilton Hotel Milan - Hotels & Hostels - Milan, Italy
2 years ago
I stayed in this hotel with 2 other friends.  The location was okay as it was within walking distance of the metro so it was easy to get to the major sites.  The hotel was typical of what you would expect of a Hilton, the room was a reasonable size and the bathroom was relatively large.  The room had an odd odor.  We were only there one night on our way out of Italy so it was okay.  We had to take a taxi from the train station, it is not within walking distance.  The staff was friendly and helpful - they showed us where the metro was.  I think there are better hotels in Milan for the price if you are on vacation.  I would be more likely to recommend this hotel to a business traveler.

Cesari Hotel Rome - Hotels & Hostels - Rome, Italy
2 years ago

This is one of my favorite hotels in Rome.  The location is great.  You are near the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona.  The hotel has been here forever, so they have perfected the art of customer service.  Our room was quiet and clean and the bathroom was large by anyone's standards.

Sermoneta Gloves - Shopping - Rome, Italy
2 years ago

Sermoneta Gloves is located in the Piazza di Spagna near the Spanish Steps in Rome.  Gloves are offered in a rainbow of colors, in a multitude of styles and in several different types of materials.  The sales people are very knowledgeable - one look at your hand and they can tell you what size you will need - they will not sell you a glove that is too big or too small even if you want them to.

There is also a store in Milan.

Genio Hotel Rome - Hotels & Hostels - Rome, Italy

I stayed at this hotel several years ago. The location can't be beat. The service was excellent. There were computers on site to access the Internet. The view from the roof of Saint Peters was beautiful. It is an easy walk to Piazza Navona.

M. R. Grandi - Shopping - Bellagio, Italy
2 years ago
Stop in at M.R. Grandi and say hello to Carlo.  Hello is all you will have to say because she will take it from there.  She speaks in a mixture of English and Italian that can be challenging.  But, she has a story for everything in her shop and she has great stories to tell about Bellagio and the small towns around the lake.  She sells a number of beautiful figurines and has a good supply of wine stoppers that make great gifts.

Le Antiche Siracuse - Restaurant - Siracusa, Italy
2 years ago
I had an excellent insalata caprese and linguine for lunch at this pretty restaurant in Siracuse. We had a large group and ate at 3 separate tables located in the upstairs area of the restaurant. The restaurant was clean and the service was very good.
