| The Duomo in Orvieto is extremely impressive, especially given the relatively small size of the town it stands in. The town of Orvieto is built atop an extinct, eroded volcano. During the time when Rome was subject to sieges, the Pope would escape to Orvieto for refuge. Since the Pope was a regular visitor of Orvieto, an impressive Duomo was built. The rest of Orvieto is a charming town with several small museums and shops worth visiting – see the Tourist Information Center across from the Duomo. Orvieto is especially known for its ceramic pottery. It is an easy day trip from Rome (about 1 hour by train). |
