| |
| Torcello is home to only 100 inhabitants, there used to be upwards of 50,000. In contrast to the fishing community of Burano here you will find farmers and open fields. You can walk up the tower of the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta and get a beautiful view of the islands. The church is known for its mosaics - be sure to look at the floor which also has mosaic patterns. Like the entire area around Venice during tourist season Torcello can be crowded. You will enjoy your visit more if you arrive early or late in the day, but make sure you do not miss the last boat out. |
