This piazza is the heart of Venice.  It is home to St. Mark’s Cathedral, the belltower, and Doge’s Palace.  It is a great starting point for any visit to Venice, since you can hit several sites close by.  Also, the piazza is famous for its pigeons.  You can buy some bird food from a street vendor and the pigeons will literally flock to you.  There are many restaurants that line the piazza, and it’s a fun place to enjoy an afternoon drink (if you don’t mind spending $20 for a glass of wine).  Most of the restaurants have outdoor seating in the piazza and live musicians.  It is a great way to soak up the ambience of Venice.

Piazza San Marco is the heart of Venice and the one place in the city everyone visits. The Piazza is home to some of Europe's finest Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. As you enter the square from the west you will be facing the stunning Byzantine cathedral. Next to the cathedral is the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) the seat of the government. The Piazza is full of outdoor restaurants and caffe's many with bands serenading the patrons. Sitting at these restaurants is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, but you will pay a surcharge to sit there so make sure you will be spending enough time sitting there to make it worth your while. The Campanile (belltower) stands opposite the basilica. A belltower has been in this location since the 9th century. In July 1902, the tower disintegrated into a pile of bricks and debris. The tower was rebuilt according to the design from 1514. You can take the elevator to the top of the tower for views of the city, lagoon and alps.
