A trip to Italy would not be complete without visiting the larger than life churches. Our first stop was the Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore. This church was designed by Andreo Palladio. The exterior is alabaster white. The design dates back to the renaissance period. The interiors were luminous with sunlight pouring through the stained glass. The paintings displayed include Madonna in throne with saints by Sebastiano Ricci; Last Supper by Jacopo Tintoretto and other beautiful paintings. The church is run by Benedictine monks and there's a monastery beside the church. The best view of the entire island is seen from the Piazza San Marco. |
