| This Renaissance clock tower built in the late 1400's stands guard over the entrance to the Mercerie, a chain of five streets linking the Piazza San Marco with the Rialto. The clock displays the phases of the moon and the signs of the zodiac. Local legend has it that the inventors of the clock had their eyes gouged out to prevent them from ever making a copy. On the upper level a great golden lion stands against a star-spangled blue background. At the very top stand two huge bronze figures who strike the bell on the hour. At Epiphany and Ascension Week, angels emerge from the side doors and lead the Magi to bow to the Virgin. |
