The Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni is a favorite among the guild houses in Venice because of its charm and intimate setting. One of the most charming—and unsung—Venice attractions is the Scuola di San Giorgio. The scuole, dating from the 13th to 19th centuries were charitable institutions established by trades or communities to provide dowries and educations for poor children. The organizations grew richer and soon displayed their wealth with impressive meeting places. The Schiavoni were from what is today modern Croatia.
