Established by Dominican friars in 1221, the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. Monks grew the herbs used in medicines and ointments including a rosewater disinfectant thought to protect against the plague. The shop is located in an ancient palazzo with a frescoed 13th-century chapel and is the most decorative pharmacy you are likely to see. The store is full of wonderful soaps, bath oils, body lotions, face creams, etc. Many of the items are still made from slightly modified 14th -16th century recipes. I wandered into this store with its unassuming entranceway on one of my visits to Florence and was amazed. I go back every time I visit Florence.
