The Bargello is one of Italy’s best known and most important sculpture museums with works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Benvenuto Cellini, Giambologna among others. The Bargello is the oldest surviving civic building in Florence. Constructed in 1255 it was the headquarters of the Capitano del Poplo. From the 16th century until 1859 the Medici turned it into the residence of the Bargello (head of police), a torture chamber and the city jail. The Gothic courtyard was the site of the gallows and chopping block. In 1865 the building became a National Museum, one of the first in Italy.
