Located on the site of a monastic garden, Orsanmichele was built in 1337 as a grain market. Religion and trade were linked together in medieval Florence and Orsanmichele is a testament to this relationship. Orsanmichele began as a Benedictine monastery and was later turned into a granary. Inside the building you can see grain shoots, grain stores and a carving of an overflowing bushel. The outside of the building is decorated with statues of the guilds’ patron saints, each one commissioned from a leading sculptor. What you see today are copies, the originals are located in the museum inside the building.
