Santa Croce is the largest Franciscan church in the world and one of the most beautiful renaissance buildings constructed. The church houses the tombs of famous people in history -- Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante and Machiavelli.

The collection of art features Giotto frescoes in the 2 chapels that sit right next to the high altar. There were paintings of St John the Evangelist, St John the Baptist and St Francis. The artworks depict how they lived their lives during their times. There are 5 halls that display various paintings.

It's a huge church. Best to come in the mornings.

At the time it was built in 1294, Santa Croce was one of the largest churches in the world. Santa Croce has the typical Florentine white, green and pink striped façade. The huge and somewhat gloomy interior has an open timber roof that is typical of Franciscan churches. Santa Croce is home to the tombs of many of Florence’s most famous citizen including Michelangelo, Galileo, Ghiberti, Rossini and Machiavelli. There is also a monument to Dante who though born in Florence, died in exile in Ravenna where he is buried. The Castellani, Baroncelli, Medici, and Rinuccini chapels are all beautifully decorated, but the highlights are the Peruzzi and Bardi chapels, both frescoed by Giotto in the 14th century. A door leading out of the south aisle will take you through a closter to Brunelleschi’s Cappella dei Pazzi. A leather school operates in one of the buildings of the Santa Croce, where you can see artisans making a wide assortment of leather products, most of which are for sale.
