The beautiful 13th - century Dominican church of Santa Maria Novella contains some of Florence’s most important artworks by Giotto, Brunelleschi, Ghirlandaio, Masaccio and Lippi. The stunning black and white marble façade is by Alberti. The interior is one of the finest examples of Florentine Gothic architecture. The walls at one time were full of frescoes, many of which were lost in the 16th century when the interior was whitewashed and the windows shortened so side chapels could be added. The Green Cloister is reached via a separate entrance to the left of the church. In 1563 Cosimo I de’ Medici held horse races in the large piazza outside the church.
