Sitting on a hill above the south bank of the Arno, the church offers beautiful views of the city. San Miniato al Monte is one of Florence’s oldest and most beautiful Romanesque churches. San Miniato al Monte was founded in 1018 near the tomb of Minias, a rich Armenian merchant who traveled to Florence to spread Christianity. Minias was beheaded in AD 250 for his beliefs and according to legend, picked up his severed head and walked up the hill with it, to be buried where he’d lived a solitary life. The interior of the church is unusual, featuring a raised choir built over the crypt and a marble floor decorated with signs of the zodiac. If you visit at 4:30 pm in winter or 5:30 pm in summer you may hear a Gregorian chant. Visit the monk’s shop for lavender, honey, herbs and homeopathic remedies.
