Santo Spirito was Filippo Brunelleschi’s last great church. The church was designed in 1435 but Brunelleshi died before the church was finished. The façade, which remains unfinished, was added in the 18th century. The church was described by Bernini as the “most beautiful church in the world.” There are 38 small side chapels adorned with 15th and 16th - century Renaissance paintings and sculpture. Next door are the remains of the Cenacolo di Santo Spirito monastery.
