San Miniato al Monte is a beautiful church atop one of the highest terrains in Italy. The paintings on the ceiling were breathtaking. Couldn't find words to describe it but I got goosebumps just looking at the magnificent works of art. One of the paintings depicts St Miniato to the right of Jesus holding a crown. St Minias was the first Christian martyr in Florence, Italy. It was said that he was thought to have been a Greek merchant or an Armenian prince who went to Rome for a pilgrimage. He was persecuted and ordered to be beheaded by the Emperor. According to the legend, after St Minias was decapitated he picked up his head and went back to the cave of Monte alle Croci where he died. That cave is now where the church stands. |
