Pizzeria Straniero is a tasty pizza maker (pizzeria) in Conegliano in terms of take away, to eat at home. The pizza they make is tasty, although really pizza is nearly always tasty in Italy. Pizzeria Straniero's price is reasonable and the pizza they do is not very large, so you can fit something else with your dinner. In some pizzerias the size is so big, or at least that's what I feel, that you cannot fit anything else with the Pizza. I would recommend people staying in Conegliano to order their pizza from there by phone.

The Festival Bar is a very famous group of concerts live across several Italian cities well covered on TV. Indeed CD collections are also sold in music shops. The Festival Bar is the music icon of Italian music and is an annual event that unites millions of fans in different cities with rock-stars, and singers from Italy but also from abroad. It would be very nice to stand by the fans and listen to Laura Pausini and Avril Lavigne live.

When you are in Italy you probably don\'t want to miss drinking Italian naturally frizzy water. The thing to be careful about is that many of the water companies offering frizzy water in Italy don\'t offer naturally frizzy ones, but CO2 is added to the natural water. Ferarrelle is an exception where the tasty water naturally comes frizzy and carbonated from the well in Italy. This is available in every supermarket, but not every restaurant offers it.

Autogrill - Restaurant - Milano, Italy

This is an amazing one-stop service station located on the highways. It was established in 1946 on the highway Milan-Novara. It has many branches all across Europe today, offering the same great service. Basically you are driving on the high way, and you need to fill the fuel and your stomach too. The best you could find is the modern and well-maintained Autogrill service stations. The Autogrill usually includes a petrol station, a self-service restaurant, a bar (caffee) and even shop. And of course a toilet, in case you need one.

Caffe Florian - Restaurant - Venice, Italy

If I don't go wrong this is the Caffe in Piazza San Marco that made us pay 5.00 euros per person for the musicians service they had. Basically, near the Caffe tables there is a stage on which a classic musicians band performs. I personally did not like the music very much and found it to be an annoying aspect of the square. I was all surprised and angry when I learnt that I was going to be charged 5 euros for it!

Upim - Shopping - Conegliano, Italy

Upim has many branches in Italy, at least northern Italy. Chances are you will find one in almost every city.

It sells cosmetics, accessories, clothes and household gift articles. It's considered a convenience shop when compared to other shops that sell branded products in town.

I don't like the clothes offered, but for underwear and socks it might be the best choice in town.

Amici Miei is a popular pizzeria in San Fior, in the province of Conegliano. Amici Miei offers a tasty and large pizza, so one Pizza is likely to be more than enough for dinner. Indeed you may want to share one, if you plan to order an appetizer or some salad. Amici Miei has tables both indoor and outdoor.

A special thing about Amici Miei is that it is open on Mondays too. This is unlikely for many pizzerias in Italy.

Pizzeria California - Restaurant - San Fior, Italy

I'm not suggesting you take a train from Milan all the way down (actually east) to San Fior just to give Pizzeria California a shot. But if you happen to be around, you know where to go. Pizzeria California makes very tasty pizza in town and is reasonably priced.

The pizzeria also offers take away service. Indeed to eat inside the restaurant you will pay a service charge in addition to the pizzas price. This is common in Italy.

Question About First Trip To Italy

Italy is full of cities worth a visit. I'm not saying that just to advertise Italy, but I'm saying it because every city has a unique, beautiful and interesting aspect. Venice is amazing for it's architecture, and connection with water. You are on a city build over 1XX islands, connected by bridges. And all this was done before the industrial revolution, after the barbarians invaded Europe. You may not want to miss the Italian Alps. Cortina and Santo Stefano are both good places by experience, by I'm sure any other town on your way by train will be just as great.

Favorite Foods in Italy

To start with I disagree with F C Lee. Italy is the Pizza's queen with no doubt and you cannot go to Italy, and particularly to Naples, and not eat it. In Naples pizza margherita is served with a finger-licking mozarella, unique in Italy. Pizza in Italy is thin (unlike in America) and is made with light and genuine ingredients (not stuffed like in America). Authorities are trying to 'patent' it! Insalata di Riso (cold rice with some vegetables) is my favorite summer dish and is served in many restaurants in Italy. I used to eat about 10 dishes a day of it! You can also do it yourself and take it on tour, for a quick super tasty snak. Of course, Tiramisu' and Gelato are the best sweets. Be careful (abstainers) that Tiramisu is sometimes made with liquor.

Romantic Hotels in Italy

I absolutely agree with Sara. There is nothing more romantic than being hugged by your husband on an cool evening on board of the famous Gondola. Both Las Vegas and Doha are trying to copy the romantic nature of this beautiful city bringing gondolas to sail their artificial canals. You cannot go wrong in Venice. I don't know any particular hotel, because I lived near by it, and never needed to book one, but there is a pretty good and cheap one opposite the train station.

Beware the gypsies, pigeons and strikes

of course one always needs to be careful. It's a good idea to carry a paper (or electronic) checklist of the things you are carrying with you and the things you left back at the hotel/flat and sent a reminder to check the list every X hours. I know it might sound annoying or too careful, but for me it's a best practice. Especially because after eating a pizza margherita in a Naple's pizzeria with the mozzarella napoletana you are likely to easily forget your phone/or disturbingly overloaded wallet on the table. You should also be careful about your passport. I heard of someone whose passport was stolen, and used by someone else to travel!

How come you get a view of the OCEAN in Italy??! Which ocean? Italy is a peninsula bordered by the Mediterranean sea. The Mediterranean sea in Italy is 'divided' into the Mare Adriatico (North-East), Mar Ionio (South-East), Mar Tirreno (South-West), and Mar Ligure (North-West). Villa's are a good idea for richies only in Italy. Your best bet would be a 3-4 stars hotel room, or a flat on the beach.

WiFi Hot Spots in Italy

I agree with what Sergio said. WiMax (which is Wireless Internet covering a whole city) will be soon introduced in Italy. At least the Ministry of Telecommunications received the bids for the service. It will definitely cover big cities like Milano. Fingers crossed it will be there in Summer 2009. I don't know if they will do it like in Germany, where you pay 10 euro (!) per hour, or if it will be free paid of the taxpayers pockets. In Italy there is a tendency to drain taxpayers :( Like everywhere else be careful about your laptop. Mobile phones, wallets, PDA's and laptops are commonly stolen in Italy, but elsewhere too. Before leaving a restaurant make sure everything is with you.

Live in Italy for 1 Year

There are some many beautiful cities in Italy to stay in. It really depends on the personality of the person. If I loved to stay by the sea/water I would go for Genova or Ancona, and if I have extra money to spend I would live in Venice. If you are like me, and like to wake up on the view of snowing mountains then the choice is wide from Cortina to Bolzano to Santo Stefano. Now, let's talk about money. It would be quite expensive to rent a flat in the big cities, and it would be much cheaper to get one away from them. So, if I wanted to stay near to Venice I would live in San Fior or Conegliano, which are 30-minutes-by-train away. Small towns are also likely to be less trafficked, and less expensive (other than rent) than big cities. Looks like I'm the economist here :)

Sergio says lots of good stuff :) . Bologna has the oldest university in the world, older than Cambridge and Oxford. About 1000 years old. I would definitely want to have a tour around the oldest university in the world. Indeed Palazzo Poggi is a museum in the university. This is a link to the museum website in English http://www.museopalazzopoggi.unibo.it//poggi_eng/index.html I would be a bit alert in Bologna, being a big city full of local and erasmus students. Indeed the municipality has some laws that forbid selling alcoholic drinks at the discosteca on Sunday nights, and forbids having tattoos in 'sensitive' parts of the body. Having said that I'm not saying it is a dangerous city.

Villa in Italy

I would not recommend renting a villa in Italy. Like Sergio said rent is likely to be very high, especially in the August. Also most of the people, in Italy, live in flats. If you choose a villa you are likely to be quite far from the center of the city. I'm talking about an independent villa. In Italy there are many houses where the first floor tenant has his own garden and entrance, but the second floor of the house is rented to another tenant who will also have his own garden and entrance.

Renting a car in Italy?

Hmm...I disagree. I would not recommend any tourist, including an American to rent a car in Italy for a variety of reasons: 1. To start with, fuel in Italy is very very expensive. It's now almost hitting 2.00 euros per liter (USD 3.14) and things seem only to get worse with increasing oil prices, and the dollar depreciating. Also, to drive in Milan you need to pay a 2.00 Euro 'traffic tax' per journey, something similar to the traffic fee paid for driving in London's centre. Authorities are considering to add a similar tax in Rome too. 2. Cars rental is also likely to be expensive in Italy. There are many highly priced costs and taxes associated to owning a car in Italy and these are passed to the car rental customers, in addition to the rental profit. 3. A good thing about driving in Italy is the 'Autostrada' (highway) linking major cities. The problem in summer however is that you are likely to queue long hours to pass (and pay) the Autostrada gate. In your trip from Milano to Padova, for instance, you are likely to encounter many gates. 4. Road signs in Italy are only in Italian, and if you stop someone on the road and talk to them in your American accent they are likely to answer you in Italian. Remember that Italy has an aging population and that most people are not likely to have ever learnt English at school. 5. Having an accident is likely to be a nightmare for a tourist, especially when the police will find it difficult to communicate in English! When renting the car you are likely to be signing an agreement in Italian anyway. At last, I would suggest you to use the train for inter-city transport. The train is relatively cheap, compared to the UK for example, since it's subsidies by the government. It's punctual most of the time, pretty fast, and you get the chance to talk to someone in the cabin. Chances are you will also meet other tourists on board. For transport inside the city I would recommend your feet. The weather is beautiful (usually) and you are likely to enjoy every walk. I forbid you to use the taxi, which is again very expensive. You may use the underground train or the bus/tram if you need to go to the other side of the city. Mind that I may be biased towards green transport, because I want you to reduce your carbon emissions. The ideal way to move in Italy to me, is to have your own folding bicycle and take with you on the train. Gabriele www.simpatico.com.qa
