Most tourists spend a few hours in Pisa looking at the leaning tower of Pisa and the Basilica.  If you can stand the crowds both are worth a visit.  But what makes Pisa Pisa is the University.  The University's 50,000 students (Pisa has about 100,000 inhabitants) definnitely affect the atmosphere of the city.  The University has been around since 1343 so there is a lot of history there.  The best restaurants in the city are near the University.  The University of Pisa is right on the river so it is a great place to walk around.  If you have a few hours in Pisa you should definitely visit the University.
