The gilded 11th-century exterior of Basilica di San Marco, with its soaring domes, spires, and statuary is one of the world's finest medieval buildings. Step inside the cathedral and you will find a dark interior that is both crowded and overwhelming. The inside of the basilica covers about one and a half square miles and is full of spectacular mosaics covering the walls and ceilings. The Basilica was created to house the body of St. Mark, Venice's patron saint. Many of the artifacts housed here were looted from other countries. The spectacularly ornate and gem-encrusted Pala d'Oro altarpiece was made for the church in Constantinople in 976. However, the bronze horses were stolen from Constantinople’s Hippodrome around 1200. The ones you see today are replicas. The long lines and huge crowds can be daunting so try to visit early in the morning or late in the day when the crowds can be less intimidating. Visit the Piazza in the evening, if you are lucky you will see the sun bouncing off the golden exterior. Check the schedule but mass is often held at 7am.
