The Palazzo Ducale is full of narrow hallways, opulent rooms and hidden chambers. It was the home of the doge and is where much of the business was conducted. The exterior of the Doge's Palace is covered with light stone and is recognized by its moorish looking windows and archways. The facade facing the water is from the 14th century that facing the piazzetta is from the 15th century. Fires in 1574 and 1577 caused extensive damage to the interior of the building. Visit the Sala dello Scudo and see the 16th century maps that show how the world was viewed by the people living at the time. From the outside you can get a view of the white stone bridge of sighs by standing with the throngs of people standing on the bridge or you can walk around to the other side and stand on a bridge by yourself and get the same view.  Once inside, you will be able to walk across the bridge and through a series of prison cells. Most of the cells you see were for criminals guilty of lesser offenses, the more serious criminals were housed in cells below the waterline. The last admission is 60 minutes before closing. There is a 75 minute secret itinerary of the palace that is worth the extra cost. Try to book in advance as these tours fill up quickly.
