I think best way is the train travel. Trenitalia.com is the key provider and you'll see tickets around $14 for a 2-4 hour trip.
If you decide train travel, please be aware of a few safety tips on the Termini in Rome Crime is able to hit you if you aren't paying concentration to your surroundings. Keep your funds in a secure place and keep your eye on your luggage at every time.

If you're not interested in driving, train travel is best for you. I think, the train will be the good solution for you. You will find the tickets around $15 for a 2-3 hours trip. I want to say you that read the safety instructions at the train station (Termini in Rome) to be safe from thieves and other criminal.
