The Brancacci Chapel, located inside the Oltrarno Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, is generally recognized as the place where the Renaissance started. In 1423, Felice Brancacci, a local silk merchant, commissioned the fresco cycle that adorns the walls of the chapel. The Brancacci Chapel contains the work of three great Renaissance painters, Masaccio, Masolino da Panicale and Fra Filippo Lippi. The frescoes contain 12 scenes from the life of St. Peter. St. Peter is easy to identify as he is wearing orange robes throughout the scenes. Work on the chapel was stopped in 1428 when Masaccio moved to Rome. He died there a few months later at 27. The Brancacci family was soon exiled by the Medici. The fresco cycle was completed 50 years later by Filippo Lippi. The frescoes are recognized for their use of perspective and light and shade. Michelangelo was known to have studied them. Admission is by a separate entrance at the side of the church and is limited to 30 people per 15 minute time slot. Try to book ahead.
