The charming town of Lucca with its medieval ramparts is close enough to Florence for a day trip or even a long lunch. Lucca was founded in about 200 BC. The Piazza dell'Antifeatro is what survives of the ancient Roman amphitheater. Imagine what the city was like when amphitheaters were still used for sport and gladiators walked through the arches to meet their fate. Today the amphitheater has a number of cute shops and reasonably priced outdoor cafe's. Many of Lucca's narrow streets and alleyways are only open to pedestrian traffic. The town is graced with exquisite churches, gardens and palazzi. You can walk, bike or jog around the tree lined walkway on top of the ramparts. Bicycle rental shops are plentiful. From the top of the walls you can see the Torre dei Guinigi with oak trees growing on top of the tower. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to Lucca by train. It is an easy walk from the train station to the town of Lucca.
