Question About First Trip To Italy

I am going to Italy for the first time.  I will be flying into Milan and plan to spend 3 days in Florence.  I will be there for a total of 2 weeks.  What other places should I plan to see in northern Italy?

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

Bellagio!  If you are flying into Milan it is an easy trip to Bellagio on Lago di Como.  You can take the train to Como and a boat to Bellagio.  It is a beautiful boat ride around the lake.  The boat makes a number of stops in small towns as it makes its way to Bellagio.  The other option is to take the train to Varenna and the ferry back to Bellagio (it is about a 10 minute ferry ride).  Both boats are very comfortable.  Once you are in Bellagio there a lnumber of excellent restaurants and fun shops.  You can hike around the town or take the boat to neighboring towns to walk through villas or enjoy scenic hikes.  Some people prefer staying in Varenna, but I am a Bellagio girl myself.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

I would not miss the chance to go to Venice.  It is about 3 hours by train.  Venice is the grand old lady of the Adriatic---yes it can be "touristy" and some of the scenes have been photographed so many times they might seem familiar--but there is a magic to the city that makes it worth a trip.  I would not pass up a gondola trip around the grand canal, a trip to Murano to see the glass blowers and time to find a nice restaurant where you can sample the wonderful Venetian seafood.

Cinque Terre - especially if you like outdoor activities.  You can hike if you are energetic or take the boat to go from one village to the other.  My favorite village is Vernazza, but it is not easy finding accomodations there.  You can stay in Monterosso, which has more roms available and more restaurants and visit the other villages.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

I prefer Varenna over Bellagio.  It is quieter and more laid back.  You can take the ferry to Bellagio if you want to go shopping or try different restaurants.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

If you are going to Venice stop overnight in Verona.  If you are taking the train to Venice you will stop in Verona anyway.  You can have a quiet, relaxing evening before you experience the crowds of Venice.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

On your first trip to Italy you need to hit the big three - Venice, Rome and Florence.  On your flight home you can start planning for your second trip based on what you liked, you will have such a good time you know you will be back.  Then you can decide lakes or sea?  Hiking or museums?

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

Italy is full of cities worth a visit. I'm not saying that just to advertise Italy, but I'm saying it because every city has a unique, beautiful and interesting aspect. Venice is amazing for it's architecture, and connection with water. You are on a city build over 1XX islands, connected by bridges. And all this was done before the industrial revolution, after the barbarians invaded Europe.
You may not want to miss the Italian Alps. Cortina and Santo Stefano are both good places by experience, by I'm sure any other town on your way by train will be just as great.

Portofino! It is a little village in Genoa. You will be surrounded by yachts and the sea, little stores and the best fashionable brads, the mountain and some castles... absolutely elegant, preserving the Italian essence.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

You should visit some of the smaller towns like voltera, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Cortona and Lucca.  Avoid San Gimignano - it is packed with tourists and tour buses.

My favorite place is The Amalfi Coast especially Ravello.  Ravello is beautiful and has the most beautiful views of the Mediterranean ever.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

Hello Steve,
For me you should go to Verona, which besides being a beautiful city is the famous Arena. In addition if you like the writer Shakespeare and you read “Romeo and Juliet” you can find the house of Juliet in Via Cappello where tourists come from all over the world to see. If you want I suggest an Italian site so you can see the city: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verona

Siena!  Don't forget Siena.  Siena is a magical town that everyone should visit, especially if they are already going to be in Florence.  It is not very far from Florence by either train, car or bus.  Siena has an amazing gothic cathedral that is black and white stripes on the outside.  It also has the famous Piazza del Campo where they hold the palio each year.  You can spend at least a day walking around the narrow streets of Siena.  There is an information booth in the Piazza del Campo where you can get information on what is going on while you are there.

Re: Question About First Trip To Italy

Visit the lake district no question about it.  Either Lake Como or Maggiore.  They are both beautiful and easy to get to from Milan.
